Shameem is an Afghan American physician fluent in Dari who has taken upon herself to gather items of importance to the growing community of muslim refugees. She collects primarily rugs in her garage, but also has qurans, hijabs, books for kids, and a network of women who can provide support for other muslim women, including medical support. Has a list serve comprised of lady doctors in Austin who will get periodic “wish lists” for items as we learn of them.
Julie van de Zande - Appetite for Humanity
Julie has been working with refugees since 2016 and focuses on highlighting the wonderful meals that are cooked in their kitchens. She has raised funds to supply newly arriving Afghans with the special ingredients and kitchen supplies that allow them to make the foods they know and love. She is also working with the AJR team providing groceries and other support while arrivals stay in Airbnbs/hotels waiting for apartments, including connecting with the Austin Afghan community to help cook welcome meals.

Chichi Armstrong, Armando Ruiz - St. Matthew's Episcopal Church
Chichi and Armando are St. Matthew’s church volunteers with refugee work, and has an alliance with Texas Refugee Services for providing volunteers and resources. Chi Chi is currently providing extra space at the church for RST’s warehouse overflow, and has many items such as flat screen tvs, couches, dining tables and chairs, household goods etc. RST has released this overflow to be used by Austin Jews for Refugees. She also started Ladies Lets Talk for refugee women who want to improve their English skills. Diane Kanawati - Muslim Community Support Services (Mcssaustin.org)
Muslim org in town that provides rent, utility, internet assistance + food vouchers for Halaal meat. also focus on housing and other help for victims of domestic abuse. Help with winter coats for refugee families, car seats, etc.
