The Salaam Neighbors program pairs a group of volunteers with a refugee family. Volunteers assist one or more Afghan families with specific tasks that will help them adjust and thrive in Austin.
“One of the many wonderful things about the Salaam Neighbors program is getting to establish a relationship with a family and help them directly. It has been wonderful getting to know our family and helping them adjust to being in this new place. There are so many ways to help that seem like something small to me, but they are a big deal to someone who has newly arrived here. And my children have become friends with the children in the family, which I hope is a support to them - to know an American kid who is your friend”- Amy H.

“I did not imagine that volunteering to work with a refugee family would be as enlightening, rewarding, and pleasurable as this has been. The Afghan family we are working with is so lovely and grateful for every small kindness. During these dark times, working with other caring people to help a family in need has renewed my faith in humanity and given me hope”-Mary Ann R.
